Abstract
This paper examines the symbolic significance of “Asilomar” in the two Asilomar conferences on artificial intelligence(AI). Since the landmark conferences on recombinant DNA technology in the 1970s, Asilomar has been recognized as a unique symbolic space for deliberating the societal implications of emerging technologies. However, an uncritical acceptance of this symbolism risks obscuring the intricate differences between fields and the evolving trajectories of ideas over time. Furthermore, it raises the danger of black-boxing the shifting perspectives of diverse actors involved in these discussions to a monolithic narrative of technological determinism. To address this, the paper applies Bruno Latour’s concept of the “cycle of accumulation” to examine how the symbolic significance of Asilomar has been appropriated and expanded, particularly during the 2000s. Through this lens, it explores the concerns, debates, and outcomes associated with the Asilomar conferences, illustrating how the actor-network surrounding technological determinism in AI has undergone multiple iterative cycles of accumulation to shape its current form.
