Abstract

This study aimed to compare the consumer acceptance of paper straws, as a substitute for plastic straws in beverage consumption, for environmental sustainability. The straws utilized in the consumer evaluation for iced coffee tasting included transparent plastic straws (S1), black plastic straws (S2), white paper straws (S3), and black paper straws (S4). In all, 51 participants took part in the evaluation of consumers’ liking and emotion related to iced coffee. Except for usage liking, none of the liking items showed any significant difference (p>0.05). Although no differences were observed in the consumer liking for coffee, plastic straws were significantly preferred over paper straws in usage liking (p<0.05). The color of the straw was found to have little effect on consumer liking. However, the contrast in emotional terms related to the material was more noticeable than that for the color of the straw. Plastic straws were associated with positive emotions such as good, light, pleasant, whereas paper straws were associated with negative emotions such as guilt and aggression.
