Abstract

Controller Area Network (CAN) has become the most widely used protocol in automotive networks due to its high reliability and low cost. There can be more than 80 electronic control units (ECUs) distributed in a modern vehicle. As the number of ECUs connected to the CAN bus increases, so does the busload. Due to the real-time constraints and limited resources in the ECUs, reducing busload is becoming an important problem. In this paper, we propose a systematic data arrangement algorithm to efficiently reduce the CAN data frames. Experimental results show that higher compression ratios are obtained by the proposed algorithm compared with the existing algorithm.
