Abstract

A new passive aerodynamic control method is proposed. The system uses TMD mechanism to activate the control plates, which modify airflow around the deck to stabilize bridge motion. The effectiveness of the proposed model is verified experimentally and analytically. Additionally, various parameters of the proposed system and applicability to a long span bridge were investigated. Based on the investigation, it is found that the proposed model is very effective in suppressing flutter. In the analytical results, the model also shows remarkable robustness against variation of structural properties. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
