A study on durability of reinforced concrete structure for spent fuel storage facility

Abstract

There are 20 NPPs in Korea including 4 CANDU type reactors. Spent fuels are stored in spent fuel pool in the reactor site. Spent fuel pool will be saturated in the near future. Dry type storage facilities are considered as interim storage. It is important to maintain the durability of concrete structure. Concrete wall temperature of spent fuel storage facility will be higher than general concrete structure. Dry type storage facilities will be located seaside. Therefore it is focused that concrete deterioration under high temperature and salt attack. Carbonation and salt attacks are main factor for reinforced concrete (RC) deterioration. In general, carbonation progress is much slower than salt attack progress. For the RC structure near the seashore, salt attack is considered as the major factor for RC deterioration. The corrosion simulation test was conducted under high temperature.
