Abstract

Background: Obesity and its associated diseases have become a concerning health issue not only in the middle-aged population but also in young children due to changes in lifestyle and food intake. However, the existing pharmacological therapeutic approaches to address this issue can induce serious problems. Thus, in this study, we aimed to expand the therapeutic approaches based on naturally derived products. The oriental medicine, heated powder of Ostreae Testa, is widely used as a dietary supplement. However, the effect of Ostreae Testa Water extract (OTW) on adipogenesis and adipocyte function remains to be elucidated. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential anti-obesity effects of OTW, particularly in adipocytes. Results: OTW extract treatment of fully differentiated mature 3T3-L1 adipocytes demonstrated an inhibitory effect on lipid accumulation and down-regulated lipolysis. Moreover, OTW extract suppressed the cellular oxygen consumption rate and the expression of mitochondrial activity related genes. Conclusion: Taken together, our results suggest that OTW extract plays a role in the inhibition of adipogenesis in the white adipocyte cell line, implying the potential of OTW extract as a novel therapeutic for anti-obesity treatment.
