Abstract
Simulation of the mold-filling process has been a focal point for the development of numerical methods in casting processes. Mold filling is important because casting quality is dependent upon surface fluid flow that is inherent in the process. Most of the existing numerical simulation schemes for mold filling have severe limitations due to time step restrictions or the Courant criteria, since explicit time integration is used. Therefore large computation times are required to analyze casting processes with these schemes. In this study the well-known SOLA-VOF method has been modified implicitly to simulate the mold-filling process. Solutions to model filling problems show that the proposed method is more efficient in computation time than the original SOLA-VOF method.
