CFD Application for estimation of airborne spread of HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza)

Abstract

HPAI (Highly pathogenic avian influenza) generally shows rapid spread resulting in high mortality rate and severe economic damages. Because a prevention of HPAI is challengeable, a prompt treatment against epidemics is most important counter-measure for reducing the damage from HPAI spread. The HPAI spread should be considered by direct and indirect contact as well as by various spread factors including airborne spread. Field experiments have limitations for finding out the mechanism of spread disease due to measuring difficulties, unstable and uncontrollable weather condition. In this study CFD (computational fluid dynamics) were used to estimate virus spread attached by livestock aerosol in a three dimensional specific topography including farm location, road network, and related facilities using GIS (geographical information system). The CFD model was conducted by various weather conditions including wind speeds, wind directions, and source farms. And the weather condition during the interested period was analysed and attached with CFD computed results by means of frequency matrix foam. This can be used as back data in order to take preventive measures against HPAI occurrence and spread.
