Abstract

The mechanism for diffusion of chromium atoms in stainless-steel oxide layer is proposed. Photoemission spectroscopy is employed for investigation. The diffusion property is in important in understanding the oxidation mechanism of metals. Composition variation were observed due to diffusion in stainless-steel surface during oxidation at certain oxygen partial pressure. The diffusion of chromium atoms in stainless-steel is through grain boundary diffusion mechanism.
