Abstract

A model is proposed for the calculation of the volume fraction of martensite formed during the transformation of banded austenite in a hot-rolled AISI 430 stainless steel. The proposed model includes the strain resulting from the difference in coefficient of thermal expansion of austenite and ferrite and the effect of alloying elements on the lattice parameters. The model was verified by comparing the calculated values of the transformation strain of martensite with the experimental measurements.
