Abstract

Low velocity impact analyses were performed to investigate impact characteristics of shape memory alloy(SMA) hybrid composite structures. The feasibility of SMA thin films for enhancing damage resistances of composite structures was numerically demonstrated. Large amount of impact energy was dissipated by pseudoelastic characteristics of embedded SMA thin film. The 2-D SMA model is developed and implemented in the finite element program, ABAQUS/Explicit using the user defined material subroutine to consider the behavior of SMA thin films. Damage model and failure criteria based on the Chang-Chang model were applied for damage analyses of composite structures. The simulation of low velocity impact behaviors of SMA hybrid composite structures was performed using the ABAQUS/Explicit with the developed SMA modeling and damage analysis algorithm. Various parameters, such as position, the amount of pre-strain and temperature of SMAs, which affect impact behavior of SMA hybrid composite structure were investigated to enhance damage resistance.
