Abstract

Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM-IETS) was employed to study O2 chemisorbed on Ag(110). Two vibration modes that lead to a decrease in ac conductance were observed. It was found that the vibrational intensities for both modes are spatially localized and exhibit a striking symmetry, which revealed the electronic state responsible for the inelastic tunneling process.
