Emerging applications of green supercapacitors

Abstract

Currently, most of the researchers are vigorously moving energy production from the fossil-based fuels into the fossil-free, economic-based with green approach due to their serious environmental issues and rapid depletion of conventional fossil-based materials. To produce green energy, the efficient use of natural resource materials is one of the important ways to achieve this target. There are plenty of nature resource materials available with low-cost, sustainability, and lifetime resources. The effective utilization of these materials is one of the gifted approaches to remove the fossil-based conventional materials for green energy productions. There are different energy storage devices (batteries, fuel cells and supercapacitors) that are utilized effectively for various applications. Among them, supercapacitors are one of the key energy storage devices due to their attractive characteristics such as high-power density, long cycle-life, rapid charge-discharge process. Further, the development of supercapacitor devices based on green approach is highly essential to fulfil the global energy requirement and reduce the environmental pollution. Recently, the development of green supercapacitor devices based on biocarbons derived from biomass-based raw materials (such as lignin, kenaf and so on) is an important hot topic to achieve sustainable green energy generation. This chapter aims to explain the importance of development of green energy storage devices based on different biomass through various approaches and to address future aspects and current challenges of biomass assisted carbon synthesis and electrode fabrication for the development of supercapacitor applications.
