Abstract

The fringe-field switching (FFS) liquid crystal mode has become a popular LCD mode for use with TFTs because of its superior electrooptic properties such as light efficiency, low-operating voltage, wide-viewing angle, and fast response times compared with other LCD modes. It is also well suited for high-resolution and high-aperture displays because of a self-storage capacitor and for touchscreen displays because of its stable liquid crystal alignment. The construction and operation of FFS displays are described, often by comparison with IPS technology. Design characteristics of both the FFS device and the liquid crystal material used are considered, and methods for optimizing these are described.
