Field excitation scheme using a machine-side 4-leg converter in mw-range WRSG wind turbine systems

Research output: Contribution to conferenceConference paperpeer-review

Abstract

This paper proposes a novel field excitation scheme employing 4-leg converter in Machine-side Converter (MSC) of Wound Rotor Synchronous Generator (WRSG) wind turbines. The conventional thyristor rectifier and brush/slip-ring contact for supplying the field excitation is replaced by the rotating transformer and diode rectifier in the field winding side. 4th-leg power converter of MSC provides ac voltage of medium frequency to the primary side of rotating transformer in order to reduce the size of rotating transformer. This paper also proposes a control and switching modulation scheme to regulate the field current by varying the amplitude of ac voltage at 4th-leg power converter. Generation of ac voltage of 960 Hz and the regulation of field flux has been verified through the simulation. The proposed field excitation scheme can reduce the physical size and maintenance cost of WRSG wind turbines.
