First report of acute pneumonic pasteurellosis in Korean native goats

Pneumonic pasteurellosis caused by either Pasteurella multocida or Pasteurella haemolytica has not been previously reported in Korean native goats. A clinico-pathological examination was done on three Korean native goats showing clinical pneumonia in a 9-yr operational goat farm in Namwon, South Korea. Diagnostic procedures included clinical examination, necropsy, differential hematology, bacterial culture and histopathology. Mortality reached 30% and morbidity was 80%. Spread of the disease was circumstantially suspected upon introduction of a male goat for breeding purchased from another farm. Clinical manifestations of nasal discharges, frothy salivation, weakness, abdominal respiration, inappetence and eventual deaths were observed. One differential hematological test yielded neutrophilia and lymphopenia. Necropsy consistently showed severe pleuropneumonia and abundance of serosanguinous fluid along the thoracic regions. Thoracic walls showed petechiae and extravasations. Histopathology of the lungs revealed massive infiltrations of inflammatory cells, red blood cells and fibrin. The isolated bacteria were identified as Pasteurella haemolytica. This index case could serve as reference for disease recognition, prophylactic regimen and further epidemiological investigations.
