Abstract
A thrombus (blood clot) forms in injured vessels with mainly activated platelets and fibrin to maintain the integrity of vasculature. However, obstruction of blood vessels by thrombosis slows blood flow, leading to death of tissues fed by the artery and is the main culprit of various life-threatening cardiovascular diseases. Platelet activation during thrombus formation is closely associated with a high level of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which mediates platelet-endothelium interactions and facilitates thrombotic events. Therefore, H2O2 holds great potential as a diagnostic and therapeutic target of thrombosed vessels. Inspired by the distinctive physicochemical characteristics of thrombi such as abundant fibrin and the significantly elevated level of H2O2, we developed H2O2-activatable novel nanomedicine (T-FBM) that could detect thrombi through the amplification of ultrasound/photoacoustic signal and serve as an antithrombotic nanomedicine.
