Holomorph morphology and molecular phylogeny of Podosphaera macularis causing powdery mildew on Humulus scandens in Korea

Abstract

Podosphaera macularis is the only powdery mildew known on Humulus lupulus (hop, cultivated) and H. scandens (Japanese hop, wild) globally. The powdery mildew samples on H. scandens have been poorly studied, and its teleomorph has been recorded in Korea and the United States. Since the first finding of the holomorph in 1994, a second collection of the chasmothecia of P. macularis on H. scandens was made in November 2022 in Korea. This study provides morphological characteristics of the holomorph and a molecular phylogeny of the powdery mildew found on Japanese hops for the first time, based on Korean samples.
