Intracranial meningioma with abnormal accumulation of Tc-99m MDP on bone scintigraphy different intensities between reactive hyperostosis and tumor calcification

Abstract

Many benign and malignant tumors are revealed by bone scintigraphy as focal regions of increased uptake. A 75-year-old woman with a meningioma underwent Tc-99m MDP bone scintigraphy for the evaluation of skeletal fractures. Bone scintigraphy showed two patterns of increased uptake in the right frontal region of the skull. One was smaller, more intense uptake corresponding to reactive hyperostosis along the inner table of the skull. The other was greater, less intense increased uptake corresponding to tumor calcification of a meningioma. Plain skull radiography and head computed tomography revealed a calcified meningioma attached to the right frontal region accompanied by hyperostosis along the overlying inner table.
