Abstract

ZMA showed excellent corrosion performance in flat surface as well as processed area in comparison with commercial hot-dip galvanized (GI), galvannealed (GA) and galvalume. By addition of 3 wt% of Mg and 2.5 wt% of Al, various intermetallic compounds, such as primary Zn, Zn/MgZn2 binary eutectic and Zn/Al/MgZn2 ternary eutectic were formed in the coating layer. In particular, higher Mg composition than Al induced the formation of large Zn/MgZn2 binary eutectic lamellar structures, resulting in improvement of cut-edge corrosion resistance. The corrosion behavior in accelerated corrosion test was clarified by investigation on the corrosion products by means of FE-SEM measurements. In addition, we also investigated various characteristics of the newly developed ZMA coatings for automotive applications. PosMAC showed reduced scratching and zinc particle formation in the friction test indicating an excellent galling property. Investigations also exhibited that PosMAC performed the comparable paintability to those of commercial GI and GA.
