Abstract
Motivated by discrete dynamical phenomena arising from matrix iteration, we study matrix sequences generated in M2 (ℤ9 ), the ring of 2 × 2 matrices over ℤ9 . We use the order Ord(ℑj), the period P er(ℑj), and the ending matrix Ending(ℑj) to describe the behavior of an iterated matrix sequence. Using elementary but systematic algebraic analysis, we derive structural constraints on matrices that can produce each type of behavior, clarifying in particular the roles of idempotent matrices and nilpotent phenomena. Our main results give an explicit and complete clas-sification, in terms of congruence classes [i], of all stable, amicable, and sociable matrix sequences in M2 (ℤ9) for the orders and periods. In the stable case we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for each possible order and prove that sufficiently large order forces termination at the iden-tity matrix F1 (= O). For amicable and sociable sequences we determine precisely which congruence classes realize each behavior, including sociable sequences of several prescribed periods.
