ITU-R standardization of Fixed Satellite Services (FSS)

Abstract

In this paper, we discuss recent standardization activities in the ITU-R Working Party (WP) 4B. The charter of WP 4B includes developing the Recommendations for fixed satellite systems performance. Currently, the working party is involved in, developing IP-based satellite network performance, transmission control protocol (TCP) over satellite, air interface, error performance objectives, digital performance and disaster recovery applications of satellites. To reflect the state-of-the-art technologies meeting the emerging user applications we describe the satellite network performance activities related to next generation systems. Following the discussion on the completed recommendations, we provide a brief account of the current recommendation developing efforts including quality of service and hybrid networking for emerging communication services.
