Abstract

The macrocyclic structures and behavior on the reaction of AgX (X = NO3 and CF3SO3) with bis(nicotinoyl)-4,4′-(9-fluorenylidene)diphenolates (L) have been carried out. Discrete oblong rings and linked rings were constructed via the keen competition between the inter-ring argentophilic (Ag···Ag) interaction and the electrostatic interaction between Ag(I) and its anion, and the interconversion of the two species was attempted by means of anion exchange.
