Abstract

Soluble polyimide having methylene cinnamate side group exhibited extraordinarily high photosensitivity for aligning liquid crystals. The homogeneous alignment of liquid crystals on the polyimide film, exposed to linearly polarized UV light, was achieved at an exposure energy of 0.045 J/cm2. Alignment was retained even after the heat treatment at 85°C for more than one week without any deterioration.
