Abstract

A liquid crystal photoalignment material based on chloromethylated aromatic polyimide was studied. The material possessed high photosensitivity and superior thermal stability. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra and UV-vis spectra were used to study the properties of the liquid crystals. The mechanism of of liquid crystal aligning was attributed to the anisotropic photodegradation of polyimide main chain under linearly polarized deep UV exposure. Chloromethylated polyimide was observed to be soluble in common organic solvents, which permitted low temperature process by evaporating a solvent.
