Abstract

English courses in higher education of South Korea have been conducted in the form of lecture-based instruction due to the difficulties of learning foreign literature which involves higher level of language competence and deeper knowledge of American cultural background. Such conventional teaching environment prohibited students from properly developing self-confidence and expressing their own thoughts in the issues presented in literary texts. This study aimed to develop the instructional design model in learning foreign literature with which students can improve critical thinking capacities and develop a logical way of expressing their opinions. The learning strategies suggested in the study involved a refutation debate and a mock trial. The study concluded that the debating model helped students understand the concept of debate, critically listen to others, and improve judgment. It is necessary to include inter-subjective instructional strategies to develop simulating debates in learning literature courses.
