Abstract

Active Tuned Mass Damper (ATMD) is used for the control of a tall building under earthquake loads. Active control force acting on ATMD is estimated by Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) algorithm. Optimal parameters of tuning frequency and damping ratio of ATMD for minimizing rms response of the damped main system derived by Krenk were used. The performance of ATMD for suppressing rms response of a tall building under earthquake loads is compared with that of a single Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) without control force. It is found out that a building/ATMD system is more effective than that of TMD system in reducing the response of a tall building under earthquake loads. Comparing the response of a building without TMD with a building/TMD system, a building/TMD system did not show the efficiency for suppressing response under earthquake loads.
