Abstract

Nanopowder of Fe 3Al and Al 2O 3 was synthesized from 3FeO and 2Al by high energy ball milling. A dense nanostuctured Fe3Al-Al 2O3 composite was consolidated by pulsed current activated sintering method within 2 minutes from mechanically synthesized powders of Fe;jAl and Al 2O 3. The advantage of this process is that it allows very quick densification to near theoretical density and prohibition of grain growth in nanostuctured materials. The grain size, sintering behavior and mechanical properties of the sintered Fe3Al-Al 2O 3 composite were investigated.
