Abstract

Canada has the second largest land area in the world and has a vast store of natural resources that can be mined. New and current mining activities are an important part of the Canadian economy. In 2014, mining associated activities contributed 57 billion Canadian dollars to the Canadian gross domestic product and natural resources accounted for 18.2% of Canadian goods exported (Mining Association of Canada 2015). The industry contributed approximately 71 billion Canadian dollars to the national economy in taxes, royalty payments, and employment over the last decade (2003-2012).
