Abstract

The incorporation of nanocrystals into vitreous, polymeric or inorganic salt matrices can lead to the creation of complex materials with tunable or hybrid solid-state properties. One example of such designer materials is gold nanocrystal doped glass, which behaves optically as both a metal and a transparent dielectric. Metal nanorods are a second novel dopant, which introduce the possibility to create optically anisotropic media. It is now recognized that the fluctuating mechanical modes of nanoparticles introduce a novel mechanism for optoelectronic switching and signal modulation.
