Abstract
Although biaxial retarder films have merits of optical applications, limited numbers of the biaxial retarder have been developed using reactive mesogen (RM) materials. New X-shaped RM (XRM) molecules were synthesized and optical retarder films were fabricated using mixtures of a rodlike RM and the XRM. The in-plane retardation, the out-of-plane retardation and the NZ coefficient of the retarder films were investigated. The retarder films represented negative biaxial property or z-plate property depending on the chemical structure and the concentration of XRM.
