Negative Dispersion of birefringence in smectic liquid Crystal-Polymer composite

Abstract

In this paper, we reported a new type negative dispersion (ND) retarder using a self-organization of smectic liquid crystal (LC) and polymer composite. A smectic LC absorbing a short wavelength (I) of ultra-violet (UV) light was mixed with reactive monomers absorbing a long X of UV light. The constituent molecules have intrinsically positive dispersion (PD) property. The mixtures were self-organized forming a two-dimensional structure where the reactive monomers were located in the inter-layer space of the smectic LC. The composite showed a gradual transition from PD to ND of birefringence (An) with increasing the monomer concentration.
