Abstract
The nearest-neighbor spin correlations in pyrochlore moybdates R 2Mo2O7 (R = Y, Sm and Nd) were determined using optical spectroscopy. It was shown that the molybdates exhibited ferromagnetic metal to spin-glass insulator transition, as the R ion size decreases. The effective on-site Coulomb energy Ueff and the Hund rule exchange coupling JH were estimated using an analysis based on the orbitally degenerate Hubbard model (ODHM). It was demonstrated that the effective superexchange interaction between the Mo ions depends on J H/Ueff, which determined the phase boundary of the magnetic ground states.
