Photomechanical deformation of liquid crystalline polymer based on photochromic reactive mesogen

Abstract

We synthesized a novel photochromic LC polymer which showed reversible photo-activated bending/unbending behavior responding to light irradiation. A cast squared film showed the bending direction approximately ±45° with respect to the direction of polarized light at room temperature. The lack of chemical crosslink in this photochromic LC elastomer enables the repeated solution processing after usage. The reversible photomechanical bending with a specific direction at room temperature and its excellent processibility will be beneficial to practically realize a wireless remote-controlled 3D actuator.
