Abstract
Removal of metallic impurities from Hf metal by hydrogen plasma arc melting (HPAM) has been examined. Several impurities such as Al, Ti, Cr, Fe, and Cu were efficiently removed when only Ar plasma gas was used. Furthermore, the addition of H2 to Ar plasma gas remarkably improved the removal degrees of Si, Ni, Ge, and Sn as well as above impurities. It was found that HPAM has an excellent effect to eliminate impurities with higher vapor pressures than that of Hf metal.
