Reformulation markers, linguistic typology and rhetorical conventions: The case of Spanish and Korean

Abstract

In this paper a contrastive study of Reformulation Markers (RMs) between Spanish and Korean has been conducted taking into account linguistic typology (Moreno Cabrera, 2005, 2021) and the contrastive rhetorical features of these two languages (Kaplan, 1966; Hinds, 1987; Clyne, 1994; Connor, 1996, 2008). To carry out this analysis, following a line of previous research in Murillo (2007, 2012), the cases of RMs found in the Spanish and Korean journalistic corpus have been studied. The results obtained from the research showed that the different typological configuration of the given languages (fusional / agglutinative languages) should be considered to explain the number of cases found in the corpus, the lexicalized forms of the markers addressed, and their syntactical relations of RMs in Spanish and Korean. Moreover, with regard to rhetorical traditions of two languages, we could observe as examples the use of the structure of double reformulation, especially the repetition of the Korean markers (jeuk... jeuk.../ got... got...), the copulative structure of the marker got, denoting Korean culture, and the different discursive values such as definition, denomination, and conclusion in Korean and Spanish RMs.
