Abstract
Satellite-based networks can contribute to the emergence and utility of next-generation networks (NGNs) in providing ubiquitous and universal broadband services to end users who require seamless generalized mobility. In this chapter, the basics of satellite communication systems are introduced, focusing on future satellite systems for NGNs. First, there is a brief introduction on the operational principles and characteristics of satellite systems, then satellite orbits and services in the context of international standardization issues are discussed. Next, an introduction to the current status of satellite communication technology is given. Finally, a few candidate technologies for future satellite communication systems are discussed.
