Abstract

The partial spectral weights of disordered Au-Ag alloys are obtained from the valence band photoemission spectra using synchrotron radiation, taking matrix element effect into account. We make use of the Cooper minimum phenomenon of the Ag 4d states with the measured photoionization cross section ratios. The near coincidence of the Au Sd3/2 and the Ag 4d3/2 energy positions predicted by the theoretical calculations is observed throughout the whole composition range. However, the experimental Ag partial spectral weights show that the Ag 4d5/2 states mix strongly with the Au 5d5/2 states, contrary to the non self-consistent coherent potential approximation result.
