Abstract

Objective: This study examined the mediating role of flow experience in the relationship between self-acceptance and quality of positive life among South Korean university students, based on the framework of Self-Determination Theory. Method: Data were collected from 265 undergraduates (105 males, 160 females) enrolled at four universities in Seoul and Jeonbuk, South Korea. Participants completed standardized questionnaires assessing self-acceptance, flow experience, and quality of life. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was conducted using the maximum likelihood estimator with robust standard errors (MLR). The model’s fit indices and indirect effects were verified through 1,000 bootstrap resamples and 95% bias-corrected confidence intervals (CIs). Results: The corrected model demonstrated acceptable fit, χ²(10) = 33.31, p < .001, NFI = .94, TLI = .91, CFI = .94, RMSEA = .09. Self-acceptance significantly predicted flow (β = .23, p < .001) and quality of life (β = .40, p < .001). Flow also significantly predicted quality of life (β = .38, p < .001). The indirect effect of self-acceptance on quality of life via flow was significant (β = .12, 95% CI [.03, .23]), indicating partial mediation. Conclusion: These findings suggest that self-acceptance enhances students’ quality of life both directly and indirectly by promoting flow experiences in academic contexts. The results highlight the importance of fostering self-acceptance and designing flow-conducive educational environments to support emotional well-being and life satisfaction among university students in collectivist cultures such as Korea.
