Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the possible mediating effect of mobile phone dependency on depression and school life adaptation among middle school students. Analysis through structural equation modeling was conducted using data from 2,119 middle school students collected in the Korea Youth Child Panel Survey (KYCPS) wave 3, given in 2012. First, the results show that depression and mobile phone dependency have a negative effect on school life adaptation. Second, mobile phone dependency partially mediates the effects of middle school students' depression on their school life adaptation. In other words, it was confirmed that depression has both a direct effect on school life adaptation and an indirect effect that causes reduced level of school life adaptation through mobile phone dependency. Based on these results, the present study suggests preventive measures and practical suggestions to improve the mental health of middle school students.
