Abstract
Against the dominant narrative of the history of artificial intelligence (AI), this paper shows how, during the period considered to be second global winter (1987-1993), the AI field experienced spring in South Korea. Putting the Korean language processing problem at the center, researchers began to lay the intellectual and social foundation of AI in South Korea in the late 1980s.
