Abstract

A liquid crystal display (LCD) mode with an optically compensated splay (OCS) structure achieved from vertical alignment was proposed. The device shows vertical alignment with rubbed homeotropic alignment in parallel directions. Two different configuration of LCs were possible depending on the voltage applied to the device. It was found that the device has good potential for application in displays which requires a wide viewing angle.
