Abstract

A study on control of viewing angle switching in a vertical alignment (VA) liquid crystal display (LCD) has been performed. Conventional multi-domain VA mode offers the advantages of a high contrast ratio not only in the front but also in wide viewing directions only if the compensation films such as the negative C-plate and positive A-plate are employed. The homogeneously aligned LC layer replacing positive A-plate can be switched to positive C-plate electrically. Consequently, the viewing angle region with contrast ratio larger than 5 can be switched from 180° (CR > 10:1) to 60° (CR > 2:1) in horizontal direction.
