Wide viewing angle VA LCD using dichroic dyes

Abstract

We propose the dye-doped vertical alignment liquid crystal (LC) mode for wide viewing angle characteristics. By mixing dichroic dyes with LCs, the obliquely incident light is absorbed in our device, by which we can reduce the off-axis light leakage at the dark state with little loss of the on-axis brightness. Dependence of electro-optic characteristics on the concentration of dye molecules is also studied. We expect that the proposed device can be used widely for emerging display application with wide viewing angle characteristics.
